Would you agree that the Music & Media industry leaves the consumer no choice but piracy?
Question by Psycho Panda: Would you agree that the Music & Media industry leaves the consumer no choice but piracy?
So, I bought a DVD.
Now, I have a MacBook Pro and it wasn’t cheap. And I pop in the DVD.
And my MacBook asks me to choose a region code. Yes, I’m aware every DVD related apparatus is region coded, but why?
And why does people condone it?
They’ve been abusing the consumers since the 80s and I believe modern piracy is quite the nemesis.
I don’t want the entire industry to go down, but it’s obvious they don’t want to relinquish control over their consumers.
Here’s the message that appeared:
“Most DVDs are assigned a region code that corresponds to a geographic area, to help motion picture studios control the worldwide release of movies. The first time you play a DVD with a region code, you may be asked to set the DVD drive to match that code; DVD Player is restricted to playing only discs with that same region code or with no region code. If you insert a DVD that uses a different region code, a dialog appears asking you if you want to change the DVD drive’s region code.
IMPORTANT:You can change the region code of a DVD drive only five times (including the original setting); the fifth setting is permanent. Don’t change the region code of a DVD drive unless you expect to play only DVDs that match the new region code in the future.”
I feel there’s certain aspects of this message that encompass a mockery to their customers.

I would completely agree. There are more ways that they also leave the consumer no choice but piracy. Such as not being able to back up DVDs. My family has lost countless DVDs. It’s the same with the Video Game industry, especially Microsoft. You cannot backup a game. So if a pet comes by and runs into your xBox 360 and ruins your game, then you’re completely screwed.
All in all, they do this to “protect” their choke hold on consumers and the only way to get out is to get the Media illegally.

I’ve just been given an ultimatum by my folks. I’ve just left school with a few GCSEs and I need to find a job fast. Can anyone give me any tips as to how I could possibly start working for a media/music business?
College/Sixth Form not an option.

Looks like you’re in the UK, Ireland area, right? Pick up a copy of the HotPress directory and start calling! That’ll be your best bet for Ireland. . .the UK must have something similar.
Regardless of where you are radio, is often the easiest way to get started in music and the most scalable. Just about everyone who makes it in the music industry starts out in radio.
Cheers,
