Q&A: What is the best free media player out there for Windows XP, or at least media converter?

Question by DoriSai: What is the best free media player out there for Windows XP, or at least media converter?
My computer’s a bit old, and I’m a bit peeved at the many media players I have to download just to play different media types. I want one that can pretty much play the majority of the media types out there (mp3, m4a, flv, divx, wav, midi, avi, flac, and many more) and also hopefully convert. If not, I’d like a decent converter for at least my music since I’d like to transfer to other devices, many of which will only play certain types of files. I just don’t want to have to deal with spending hours finding a plugin to play something, or downloading a whole new media player when I find out one of them doesn’t work… Thus far, my favorite player has been Windows Media Player, it’s standard and easy to use, but the last few times I went looking for plugins I had to pay for them T_T and I dunt wanna do that.

I know you prob won’t want to hear this, but I have found Itunes to be the absolute best with converting and storing my music. Alteast it will be all in the same format and easy to work with.

Simple, automatic conversion, home network sharing, video, audio, raido.

It doesn’t get much better.

My favorite for playing video is GOM Player: http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html It comes with most of its own codecs, and if it can’t play a file it will try to find the correct codec to download. I think it plays most audio files as well, but I like to use a different program for organizing and playing my music.

    I also recommend:
    VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    KMPlayer: http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4094

For playing audio I like J. River Media Jukebox: http://www.mediajukebox.com/ It has some video capabilites as well, but I’ve never used it for that.

A decent audio converter is Efficient WMA MP3 Converter: http://www.wmamp3-converter.com/

Avidemux can converter many different video types: http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/
